Employer-sponsored temporary work visa.
In December 2024, the Department of Home Affairs introduced the Skills in Demand (SID) visa program, replacing the previous Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa program. The SID visa (Subclass 482) is a temporary, employer-sponsored visa that allows skilled foreign workers to live and work full-time in Australia in a nominated position.
To sponsor someone on an SID visa, the first step is for the employer to become an approved Sponsor—which may include registration under specific streams, such as Core, Specialist, or Essential Skills pathways.
Next, the employer must nominate the position, demonstrating that it aligns with Australia’s workforce needs and that no suitable local worker is available. This process includes labor market testing requirements where applicable.
The final step is the Visa application by the nominated individual. Applicants are assessed on their skills and qualifications, English language proficiency, character, and health to ensure they meet Australia’s entry and occupational standards.
