Australia Launches MATES Program for 3,000 Indian Professionals

The Australian Government will launch the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) for Indian nationals starting November 1st 2024.

This program will allow 3,000 Indian graduates and early career professionals, aged 18 to 30, to live and work in Australia for up to two years.

To be eligible for MATES, Indian nationals must be aged 18-30 and have a recent degree in fields such as renewable energy, mining, engineering, ICT, AI, FinTech, or AgriTech. Additionally, applicants must be proficient in English, with an overall IELTS score of at least 6, and a minimum of 5 in each component.

The process involves a pre-application ballot charge of $25 and an application charge of $365, both indexed to the Consumer Price Index in future years. These fees help manage the application process and ensure the program’s sustainability. (Budget paper 2, p 7)

Participants in the MATES program will not need sponsorship from an Australian employer. They will also be able to bring their dependents, who will have work rights in Australia. This program aims to enhance Australia-India relations while addressing skill shortages in critical Australian industries.
