New Rules for Onshore Student Visas in Australia (2025)

New Rules for Onshore Student Visas in Australia (2025)

The Australian government has made important changes to onshore Student visa applications. These changes started on January 1, 2025. They apply to all students currently in Australia and must be followed when submitting new applications.

Key Change: Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) Requirement

As of January 1, 2025, all onshore Student visa applications must include a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Previously, a Letter of Offer was acceptable, but this is no longer the case.

If you apply without a CoE:

  • Your application will be rejected.
  • You won’t receive a Bridging visa, meaning you cannot legally stay in Australia while awaiting a visa decision.

A CoE serves as proof of official enrolment in a course, which must be obtained from your education provider before lodging your application. This update aligns onshore and offshore application requirements, ensuring consistency across the system.

How This Affects Applicants

Strict Compliance: Ensure you secure a CoE before applying. Without it, your application cannot proceed.

Maintaining Lawful Status: Students with visas nearing expiry must lodge valid applications to avoid losing lawful immigration status.

Bridging Visa Impact: Without a valid application (including a CoE), you won’t qualify for a Bridging visa, potentially impacting your ability to remain in the country legally.

This change underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that Student visa applicants are genuinely committed to studying in Australia.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Yes, certain categories of students, such as those under Foreign Affairs, Defence, or secondary exchange programs, may still use alternative evidence of enrolment.

What Should You Do Now?

  1. Obtain Your CoE: Contact your school or university immediately to request your CoE.
  2. Monitor Your Visa Expiry Date: Submit your new application before your current visa expires.
  3. Seek Professional Guidance: If unsure about the process, consult a registered migration agent or legal expert for advice.

The government is also implementing limits on international student numbers to address housing and population pressures. While universities are working to help students adapt, these changes highlight the importance of careful preparation when applying for a visa.

The new rules aim to strengthen the Student visa program. Staying informed and prepared is essential to avoid any complications with your application.
