The 2024/25 Federal Budget revealed several changes to immigration policies, including a major update to the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482).
Starting from November 23, 2024, the required work experience for the TSS visa will be reduced from two years to one year. This applies to all TSS streams: Short-term, Medium-term, and Labour Agreements.
Currently, the Short-term and Medium-term streams require applicants to have at least two years of work experience in their nominated occupation or a related field. However, the new regulation will lower this requirement to one year.
Despite this change, applicants will still need to meet other skill requirements, specifically having the necessary skills, qualifications, and employment background as defined by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).
For certain licensed professions, such as medical practitioners, lawyers, engineers, and nurses, specific qualifications will still be required.
For the Labour Agreement stream, the work experience requirement can still be waived if the agreement specifies less than two years.
Additionally, the new Skills in Demand visa, expected after November 23, 2024, will likely follow the same one-year work experience rule.
