Australia Unveils Permanent Migration Program for 2024-25

On 14 May 2024, the Australian Government announced the permanent Migration Program planning level for 2024–25 at 185,000 places. Of these, 132,200 places (about 70%) will be allocated to skilled workers to support Australia’s economy.

From 2025–26 onward, the government will plan migration numbers for four years at a time instead of just one year. (Budget paper 2, p8)

This change is part of a broader Migration Strategy designed to improve the overall management of the migration system.

As part of this strategy, the government expects 110,000 fewer migrants over the next few years, starting from 1 July 2024.

This reduction will be achieved through various measures aimed at better controlling and managing the number of people entering the country. Because of this, the number of people moving to Australia is expected to drop from 528,000 in 2022–23 to about 260,000 in 2024–25.

These changes aim to improve how migration is managed, balancing the economic benefits of skilled migration with the need to manage population growth.
