The federal government will host a job and skills summit at the Parliament House in Canberra on September 1 and 2 before it releases its budget.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made this announcement on 11 Jul 2022, focusing on COVID vaccination; economy; COVID pandemic; Jobs and Skills Summit; Australia’s relationship with China; Pacific Islands Forum; manufacturing; a Future Made in Australia; skills.
“We intend to bring together business, unions, civil society groups, other levels of government, to discuss how, as we move forward, we can maximise, not just the benefit for the economy that comes with new industries, that comes with good jobs, [but] how we make sure that Australians can fulfil those jobs of the future,” Mr Albanese said.
The Summit will cover a range of topics with a focus on:
- Keeping unemployment low, boosting productivity and raising incomes
- Delivering secure, well-paid jobs and strong, sustainable wages growth
- Expanding employment opportunities for all Australians including the most disadvantaged
- Addressing skills shortages and getting the skills mix right over the long-term
- Improving migration settings to support higher productivity and wages
- Maximising jobs and opportunities from renewable energy, tackling climate change, the digital economy, the care economy and a Future Made in Australia
- Ensuring women have equal opportunities and equal pay.
“We’ve just come through an unprecedented period in our history where the borders were shut for almost two years. So, at the other end of that we have a business community and an economy that’s crying out for more workers and an enormous visa backlog,” Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil stated in a media interview.
Treasurer of Australia Jim Chalmers said he and the prime minister will lead the event with the support of the ministers.
“Minister Gallagher will coordinate work on the women’s labour market experiences. Tony Burke will coordinate job security and wages. Clare O’Neil on migration. Amanda Rishworth will coordinate work on workforce participation and barriers to employment. Brendan O’Connor will coordinate work on skills and training. And Ed Husic will focus on renewables, digital and manufacturing as well as the other industries where we have big opportunities before us,” Jim Chalmers said.
