Policy Change for International Drivers in NSW Since 1st July 2023

Policy Change for International Drivers in NSW Since 1st July 2023

There have been new rules for overseas drivers in NSW effective from July 1, 2023. Visa holders are reminded to make sure you are following these new rules and only driving where you are permitted.

Here’s a quick overview:

1. Changes for Overseas Drivers:

  • Residency Rule: If you’re on a temporary visa and plan to stay in NSW for over six months, you must get a NSW license within that time to keep driving.
  • Driving Privileges: Overseas drivers who get 13 demerit points or are convicted of certain offenses risk losing their driving privileges in NSW. After completing suspension/disqualification periods, they will need a NSW license.

2. Safety and Policy Updates:

  • Road Safety Responsibility: Everyone needs to contribute to road safety, including overseas license holders who should be aware of the changes.
  • Fatal Crashes: In 2023, there were five fatal crashes involving drivers with overseas licenses, underlining the importance of following road safety measures.

3. Conversion and Consequences:

  • Conversion Reminder: Over 20,000 temporary visa holders have switched to NSW licenses since July 1, 2023. If you haven’t done it yet, go to Service NSW centers promptly.
  • Consequences of Delay: Failing to convert within six months can lead to being considered unlicensed by NSW Police, resulting in fines and potential impacts on insurance.
  • Enforcement Measures: NSW Police can impound vehicles and take away number plates from drivers without a license or those who are disqualified.
