What lies ahead for COVID Pandemic visa holders?

What lies ahead for COVID Pandemic visa holders?

The Australian Government stopped accepting new COVID Pandemic visa applications (subclass 408) on 1 February 2024.

The visa was created in April 2020 to help temporary visa holders stay legally in Australia during border closures and to address job shortages in critical sectors.

Now that the borders are open and the number of temporary visa holders is back to normal, this special visa is no longer needed to maintain a steady flow of temporary migrants in and out of Australia.

What’s next for COVID Pandemic visa holders?

If you are on a 408 visa and want to stay in Australia after your visa expires, you must apply for a different type of visa. This will help you avoid staying in the country illegally.

Each type of visa has its requirements. The right visa for you will depend on your personal goals and situation.

The Department of Home Affairs recommends that visa holders use the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system to check their visa conditions and validity.

If you stay in Australia without a valid visa, you could be detained and removed from the country. You might also have to pay for the cost of your removal.

What about the existing COVID Pandemic visa applications?

If you’ve applied for a visa before February 1, 2024, don’t worry. The Department will keep processing those applications. You can find out more about what’s next for visa applicants and holders on the COVID-19 Pandemic event visa page.

If your visa is expiring or has already expired and you’re worried, it’s best to get in touch with the Department’s Status Resolution Service or by calling 131 881 from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm.

Remember, there are specific rules about who can assist you with immigration matters.
